|
The aim of this project is to produce a cellulose based tissue encapsulant material with optimised biocompatibility. The purpose of this work is to produce membrane bound tissue that does not become fibrously encapsulated upon implantation yet acts as a support for the encapsulated cells. This will be achieved by firstly modifying cellulose chemistry and assessing the biocompatibility in vitro. The processing parameters of hollow fibre manufacture will then be investigated. The next stage will be the production of hollow tubes with different cell adhesion properties on the inner and outer surfaces. In particular the surfaces will be optimised for liver and pancriatic tissue encapsulation, assistance in this area will be sought from our collaborators. In addition mechanical testing will be performed to check the durability of the capsules. We feel that this project will train a postgraduate to be fully equipped to contribute and participate in the rapidly growing international effort to bring this technology safely to the patient.
