Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to study a range of layered Mn oxides [R (1-x) Sr (x)] (3) Mn (2) 0 (7) where R is La or Pr. The manganites are currently the subject of intense interest because they exhibit a number of intriguing and as yet unexplained properties such as colossal negative magnetoresistance, a variety of magnetic phases, and a high sensitivity of their physical properties to magnetic field and pressure. These materials can be used as a model system for studying correlations between magnetic, structural and transport properties in low-dimensional magnetics. The large response of the electrical resistivity in these materials to applied magnetic field makes them potentially useful for magnetic sensor applications. Samples of the double-layer manganites will be prepared in powder and crystal form. Most of the proposed studies will be performed in the new laboratory equipped with low-temperature and high-pressure equipment. Transport, magnetic and structural measurements will be performed to investigate the response of these materials to applied pressure. Neutron scattering of the most interesting compounds will be carried out. The proposed studies will contribute to building a clear picture of the physics of this class of materials.
