Summary on Grant Application Form |
This, primarily experimental project will focus on the preparation and in-depth investigation of a new type of complex fluid - a colloidal suspension or emulsion with one of the two phases possessing liquid crystalline (orientational) order. The fundamental novelty of such a system is its highly frustrated director texture due to a network of topological defects mediating the (elastic) interaction between the inclusions. This should result in very unusual rheological properties, which can be manipulated by altering the state of liquid crystalline order. The project has a substantial theoretical background and much of experimental groundwork has been done in its preparation.
