Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research highlights the large difference in reactivity between alkenes adjacent to an alcohol or carbonyl functional group. Rapid, reversible interconversation between alcohols and carbonyls using transfer hydrogenation catalysts (mainly ruthenium) provides an interesting approach to catalysis. Conjugate addition and Diels Alder reactions will provide the basis for examining this catalytic activation. Additionally, similar reactions will provide a means for chemical transformation of alcohol and carbonyl groups. For example, the conversion of aldehydes into ketones is consider.
