Summary on Grant Application Form
Professor Bob Dodds of the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign has been developing a research code for the solution of very large-scale 3-D solid models subjected to static and dynamic loading. A parallel version of the code (WARP3D) has been developed which makes use of the industry standard Message Passing Interface (MPI) to maintain both high efficiency and portability. It is proposed that Professor Dodds will visit Imperial College to install this finite element code on the new multiprocessor machine, funded through the EPSRC JREI programme. Having access to an in-house code will mean that extension and enhancement of the models and methods used in the code is relatively straightforward. The code will be used to analyse complex 3-D problems in fracture and materials modelling.
