Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to identify and quantify the potential benefits that can accrue from the use of multiple object models and tools in the framework of a dynamically reconfigurable codec architecture. The programme of work defined to achieve this objective has three main components. First, a coder architecture enabling a dynamic reconfiguration of the tools drawn from a common pool will be developed. Second, processing and data flow mechanisms supporting multiple object models will be devised. Finally, high level analysis and reasoning will be employed in order to determine the optimum set of objects and the associated models to represent a given image/video content. The research programme will contain a significant element of system engineering and integration. In particular it will focus on the development of flexible interfaces and on problems of automatic reconfiguration and self-optimisation. In addition to the multiple object models developed as part of the project, complementary models developed with internal funding will also be integrated into the coder system. The performance of the dynamically reconfigurable codec will be extensively evaluated.
