The principle aim is the investigation of the pseudospark discharge resulting in the generation of electron pulses with the highest simultaneous current density and brightness of any known type f electron beam source. Having constructed and operated the first coherent radiation source based on a pseudospark discharge, we have recently measured a high current density (1.5kAcm [-2]) electron beam of brightness 10 [11] to 10 [12] AM [-2] rad [-2], the proposed programme aims to enhance our understanding of the physics of the pseudospark and to produce and transport for the first time electron pulses of exceptional current density and beam quality. A second aim is to use these unique electron beam pulses to generate coherent electromagnetic radiation via the cyclotron autoresonance maser instability. This will allow exciting theoretical predictions to be investigated. A recent theoretical breakthrough in the study of CARM which takes account of the fact that resonance between the electron beam and the emitted radiation occurs simultaneously at two distinct frequencies predicts that it is possible to suppress the parasitic low frequency emission and enhance the higher frequency emission if electron pulses of sufficient current density and beam quality are used and the higher frequency is an integer multiple of the lower frequency.
