The project is concerned with a new area of co-ordination chemistry, the design and syntheses of heteroditopic receptors for the simultaneous complexation of anionic and cationic guest species, ion-pair recognition. The receptor host framework contains binding sites for anionic and cationic guests covalently linked together and fashioned to be selective for target ion-pair group 1 metal salts and zwitterionic guests. Using a variety of spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques extensive co-ordination studies will be elucidate selectivity trends and the mutual anion-cation co-operative, synergistic and allosteric properties these ditopic systems display. Neutral ditopic receptors will be prepared specifically for solubilisation, extraction and selective carrier-assisted transportation of metal salts across lipophilic liquid membranes.
