The emission of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) from industrial processes has become a question of considerable public and scientific concern in the light of evidence of their extreme toxicity. The present proposal specifically addresses PCDD/F formation in incinerator boiler systems, which has not been investigated hitherto to any significant extent. A combination of flow characterisation and simulation, fundamental investigation of formation chemistry and reaction rates, and pilot and full-scale incinerator trials will be carried out to investigate the relationships of formation with design and operational parameters. with a view to understanding and predicting formation rates and yields, and developing effective methods of control and abatement. The recent award of the JREI/EPSRC Equipment Grant (GR/J01661) to our department for the purchase of a Dioxin/Furan measuring instrument (GUMS plus Dionex automatic sampler) is the key to this programme since it now P,-nits s to analyse a statistically significant number of samnles.
