Supercritical carbon dioxide is an attractive medium for the cleaner synthesis of fine chemicals, offering the possibility of process intensification, increased selectivity and reduced environmental impact. The pace of recent research has been fast and chemical results have far outstripped the fundamental understanding of supercritical flow reactors. Therefore this project brings together chemists at Nottingham and Finnish engineers at VTT Chemical Technology with complementary expertise to develop this understanding so that reactions can be scaled-up effectively. We seek funding from EPSRC for Nottingham to participate in a collaborative programme to establish a deeper understanding of chemical reactions in supercritical flow reactions. We propose to use the complementary expertise at Nottingham and VTT to study the behaviour of these reactors in detail. Initially, our programme will focus on hydrogenation but our results will have applicability to a much wider range of reactions, including alkylation, etherification and dehydrogenation. Collaboration with Thomas Swan & Co and Chematur will enable us to test our conclusions on larger scale equipment.
