Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to conduct quantitative studies of crystallisation across the length scales from 0.1 nm to approximately 1000 nm. To do so we will1) Build a special flow cell allowing true plug-flow conditions, even at long residence times/low velocities.2) Collect data using small and wide-angle x-ray scattering, multi-angle dynamic light scattering (DLS) and Raman spectroscopy.3) Interpret data generated using existing algorithms by means of existing population balance tools.4) Develop new methods of combining population balances with convoluted data, such as those to be collected here. Our intention is to develop a generic approach to sub-micron crystallisation kinetics and structure by first developing techniques for a simple system we understand well, calcium carbonate, that exhibits clear polymorphism in an easy to control fashion. We then intend to move on to an organic system, paracetamol whose polymorphism is ill-understood. In both cases we hope to discover the kinetics for nucleation, growth and aggregation for sub-micron material while at the same time identify the interaction of chemical environment and structure.
