With the increasing use of computers in medicine, advanced pattern processing techniques are an essential component of automatic decision support systems. Inference problems in medical domain tend to have special features that are not best tackled by software packages (such as neural networks) commercially available. This project aims to advance some of my recent experience with advanced pattern processing techniques and two medical problems (risk prediction in pregnancy and monitoring liver transplant patients). The proposal is to develop novel pattern processing ideas that take a systematic approach to the problem domain. I intend to study feature extraction from multivariate nonstationary data (such as data from intensive care units, or multichannel EEG signals), feature selection in variable cost domains (with ROC curves as criteria of performance), advanced high performance classification tools (such as the Support Vector Machines); I also propose to integrate these studies in a flexible software toolbox, as well as provide an experimental Web interface to it's use to assis remote diagnostics.
