Summary on Grant Application Form
Unlike p-allyl palladium complexes, p-allyl molybdenum complexes react with comparatively hard organometallic nucleophiles. Preliminary results indicate that organocopper (I) reagents, for example, add to cationic p-allyl molybdenum complexes with inversion of configuration. In certain circumstances the regiochemistry of attack previously through to be subject to ligand control (Faller), can be subverted leading to a practical method for asymmetric alkylation. By using planar chiral complexes and chiral organometallic nucleophiles, new C-C bonds can be generated in highly hindered circumstances with the simultaneous creation of two stereogenic centres. The method offers an opportunity for the appendage of unsaturated carbon chains to heterocyclic rings which should be applicable to a wide range of natural products.
