Summary on Grant Application Form
This research programme aims to develop new technologies for adaptive structure, ie structures that can change their shape to respond to their environment. Previously, adaptive structures have been formed by putting together a large number of mechanical parts. This research will develop ways of making these structures continuous; the actuators will be embedded as an integral part of the structure. There are two key areas to this research: (i) developing the overall geometry of the structure in tandem with its microstructure to give the required overall structural properties; (ii) developing actuation systems that are suitable to drive the geometry change of the structure.Existing relevant technologies include: shape memory alloy actuators and fluid-filled actuators; bistable composite structures. This research will combine and extend these technologies, and apply them to new areas.Application of the proposed research include: lightweight robotic arms and manipulators; active endoscopes; deployable structures; rapidly-erected scaffolding; rapid-repair technologies; relining of existing water pipes.
