Summary on Grant Application Form
Rates and equilibria in reversible C-alkylations of simple ketones and aldols by carbocations based on 1, 8-dioxyxanthydrol are to be explored first. Additional structural features of the xanthyl residues are designed to place the ketone residue within the cavity of a crown ether array, and the consequences of this placement on the keto-enol tautomerism of the bound ketone will then be examined. Binding constants for selected metal ions will be measured and their effects on rates and extent of enolization evaluated. When suitable combinations of xanthydrol, ketone and metal ion are discovered, reactions of the xanthylated ketones with simple aldehydes will be examined with a view to the discovery of aldol condensations involving the enolised bound ketone.Conditions will then be south under which the complete sequence (akylation, enolisation, carbon-carbon-bond formation, and release of aldol product) is catalytic in the zanthydrol derivative.Structural variations in the catalyst will then be explored to improve catalytic efficiency, using carbocations derived from both 1, 8-dihydroxyxanthydrol, and 4,5-dihydroxyxanthydrol.
