Summary on Grant Application Form
I propose to spend up to 6 months at the University of Virginia, working on microcrystalline silicon as a photonic material. Staff at Virginia have secured funding for a project to investigate a range of techniques for depositing layers of silicon microcrystals formed in a plasma chamber. Control of the plasma conditions can lead to production of different microcrystalline layers with a range of optical properties (such as new dielectric or photonic bandgap materials). Evaluation and exploitation of these new materials relies upon optical measurements and demonstration of waveguide devices. My role at Virginia will be to assist with the establishment of ideal deposition conditions for these layers, modelling of their properties, and with subsequent evaluation. More specifically I will also be involved with the production and modelling of the waveguide devices for characterisation. On return to Oxford I intend to maintain a strong collaborative link with the researchers at Virginia and to seek further funding in support of related research. The cost of the visit is estimated as 1200/month of stay, plus a further 800 for travel expenses. A 6 month visit will therefore require 8000.
