Summary on Grant Application Form
An experimental study will be made of microstructures and crystal textures produced in conditions that simulate those occurring during large-scale single crystal processing and secondary remelting of Ni-base superalloys. One aim is to identify the factors controlling the orientations produced and the occurrence of stray grains when single crystal processing is extended to highly alloyed superalloy compositions and to large castings appropriate to industrial gas turbines. A second aim is to relate the grain morphologies, textures and defect occurrence in conditions appropriate to secondary remelted ingots of modern Ni-base superalloys for turbine discs to explore the viability of improving their forgeability. The work will focus on the roles of the principal process parameters (temperature gradient and solidification rate), the curvature of the solid/liquid interface and the alloy melting range. It will make extensive use of electron back scatter diffraction to characterise micro-crystallography and grain boundary misorientations. The experimental study will be linked to parallel developments of numerical models of microstructure evolution during solidification.
