The aim of this research project is to develop a perturbation theory for dispersion-managed solitons and to progress path-average theory of optical pulse dynamics in fibre systems. The role of optical fibre communications will considerably increase in the near future with the introduction of new services such as video on demand, on-line banking, high speed computer communications and other elements of economic, educational and social infrastructure. The main requirement for transmission systems to provide such services is high network capacity. The mathematical problems we propose to investigate are the backbone of a possible future generation of advanced communication networks. We will develop perturbation theory for DM solitons, progress general theory of DM solitary waves and verify theoretical results by extensive numerical modelling for specific applications. Modelling and theory invoke a broad range of mathematical techniques, such as, Lie-transform , Hamiltonian and Lagrangian analysis, Poincare mapping, momentum method. Consideration of primary importance will be comprehensive path-averaged theory of DM solitons, perturbation theory for DM solitons and soliton stability.
