Under this programme, we plan to undertake a broad based investigation to explore the chemistry and synthetic applications of methyleneaziridines. The programme is subdivided into three parts:Part 1 will focus on devising novel intermolecular reactions of methyleneaziridines. We plan to explore a wide variety of simple addition reactions to the exocyclic double bond of methyleneaziridines including hydrogenation, hydroboration and hydrosilylation reactions. We will further develop the potentially very useful organocuprate mediated ring opening reactions of methyleneaziridines will be undertaken.Part 2 will centre upon exploring a wide variety of intramolecular reactions of methyleneaziridines. We propose to effect intramolecular Diels-Alder reactions of methyleneaziridines as well as a variety of radical and metal mediated cascade sequences using this ring system. These methods are expected to provide efficient approaches to a diverse range of polycyclic heterocyclic systems.Part 3 briefly outlines some new ideas for preparing methyleneaziridines functionalised on the exocyclic double bond. Access to such materials will further enhance the synthetic utility of methyleneaziridines.
