Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent research has indicated that technology in UK industry is not exploited to the same extent as that in the USA. Identifying and evaluating the factors which cause this contrast would be valuable to manufacturing industry in the UK. One of the most authoritative technology focused studies in the USA is sponsored by the national Science Foundation, and is conducted by Paul Swamidass at Auburn University. The proposed research will take the form of a short visit to meet researchers at Auburn University. Discussions will be held on the subject of technology and strategy research at Auburn, and research findings will be explored. Particular attention will be given to research methods and tools, especially survey and interview techniques, and how the case study work is conducted. This will include accompanying researchers on at least one industrial study trip. Throughout the visit perceptions will be gathered on the value of this work to manufacturing industry. The visit programme will also include attendance at the conference of the Production and Operations Society (POM-99), where two papers will be delivered. (Conference fees are not requested).
