Theoretical research at Surrey, sponsored by Magnox Electric, has investigated the proportion of grain boundary fracture which occurs when steels fail in a brittle manner. The work has consistently predicted much larger amounts of intergranular failure than is observed experimentally. This led to discussions with Professor John Knott of Birmingham and Dr Valerie Randle of Swansea which established that a programme of integrated theoretical and experimental research on the mechanisms of fracture of polycrystalline materials was needed. The present tri-partite ERCOS proposal, supported by BNFL Magnox Generation, is the outcome of this conclusion. The work at Surrey will be as follows: (a) Develop models of poly-crystals used in the past so that they provide a more realistic representation of steels. In particular use large groups of 3-d distorted grains, rather than 2-d models or 3-d models with a few regular grains. (b) Use ranges of energy for cleavage, grain boundary and ductile fracture and local plasticity. Explore changes of grain boundary energy arising from segregation of impurities. (c) Investigate the role of precipitate particles and cavities in the nucleation of cracks. (d) Develop methods of geometrical and statistical analysis and computer modelling routines necessary for the above research.
