Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to assess what determines road-user exposure to particulate air pollution that is believed to be damaging to health, specifically the differences due to route travelled, day-to-day variation in weather conditions, time of year and mode of transport used. The local contribution from diesel exhaust will be compared with the contribution from long-range transport of sulphate and other secondary aerosols. A prototype add-on to the ADMS-Urban air quality management software, to estimate road-user exposure, will be developed and a validation strategy for it defined. This project funded by EPSRC under the Inland Surface Transport LINK Scheme will be carried out by Imperial College in collaboration with Cambridge Environmental Research Consultants (responsible for the development of ADMS0Urban), and bus operators First-Group, Go-Ahead Group and London Transport. It will form a contribution to the European EUREKA environment project EUROTRAC-2 urban air pollution sub-project SATURN.
