Summary on Grant Application Form
One significant research challenge posed by the growing number of older people in the population concerns the mobility-related problems which increase with age, inhibit independence, and can be a prime cause of admission to expensive institutional settings. The scope for engineering advances, particularly in the field of rehabilitation and assistive technology, is immense. The challenge is to produce aids, devices and products that are attractive to older people themselves, since without such acceptability new technology is unlikely to be taken up by older people. Current work by the applicants suggests that older people have significant and detailed views both on the problems and what might help to resolve them. The proposed study therefore seeks to gauge the views of older people, then to use these views to propose research and development options which address some of the identified problems, and finally to obtain the older people's responses to these proposals. To foster appreciation of the importance of taking users' views into account and the needs of older people, it also involves a small pilot group of postgraduate engineering students in the discussions with older users.
