Ion imaging is still a rather new technique which allows a particularly direct visualisation of the dynamics of a wide range of gas phase reactions, including molecular photodissociations. This proposal seeks funds to enable use of a state-of-the-art imaging spectrometer ini) high resolution studies of the velocity and angular distributions of atomic fragments (e.g. H, Cl and 0 atoms) arising in a range of molecular fragmentation processes, and the ways in which these vary with excitation wavelength,ii) as a spectrometer for photoelectron imaging - thereby providing new insights into a range of molecular photoionisations, and of competition between fragmentation and ionisation processes in highly excited gas phase molecules, andiii) to allow new and detailed study of the fragmentation dynamics of small molecular ions, with high quantum state specificity.
