Summary on Grant Application Form
There is no understanding of the effects of grain boundaries or of grain boundary orientation on dielectric loss. Hence we cannot really begin to understand dielectric loss in polycrystalline materials. The objective of this project is to understand and describe dielectric loss in sintered ceramic dielectrics and to study the relationship between defects and the sources of loss. In the work programme which follows all experiments will be carried out on three forms of material: single crystals, bicrystals and polycrystals in increasing order of structural complexity. It is also intended that the effect of pressure on the high frequency loss be examined by uniaxially compressing a disc sample of dielectric.
