Powder diffraction is the major technique for the investigation of the solid state; this includes the bulk, surface coatings and the solid surface. As a result, powder diffraction is used routinely by physical scientists, material scientists and engineers where it can be used in-situ to monitor reactions and observe the behaviour of materials under working conditions.In conjunction with phase identification software and the JCPDS, powder diffraction is a powerful technique for determining the composition of unknown materials including geological specimens and monitoring impurities under quality control conditions. As the technique is inherently non-destructive, it can also be used to identify forensic samples and valuable specimens. Powder X-ray diffraction provides a rapid method to screen materials for single crystal analysis and check SXD determinations. Developments in powder diffraction technology and computing hardware/software now allow structure refinement from powder X-ray diffraction, where single crystals are difficult to grow or are inappropriate for modelling the working powdered material.This application is for a high-resolution powder X-ray diffractometer with primary monochromator and controlled environment stage to underpin the research of five departments in science and engineering at Loughborough University.
