New technology and products have the potential to improve quality of life. However, unless the technology is made available to everyone then it also has the opportunity to alienate. As many products continue to be designed to appeal to the younger generation, the lucrative and growing older market sector is being ignored and large sections of the population are being excluded.The proposed research seeks to address this situation by providing industrial decision makers, and in particular those involved in the commissioning or managing of design with (a) mechanisms to understand the significance of age and capability related factors, and (b) the guidance required to respond appropriately at all stages of the product development process, from planning through to market, thus enabling them to deliver more effective products and services with the potential to satisfy customers of all ages and abilities.The main objective is to provide a Framework for a more effective and professional approach to the management of design within industry, one which promotes an ethos of odesign for allo is supported with appropriate tools, gives access to relevant information and therefore adds to the repertoire of skills and expertise of industrial decision makers, designers and design managers.
