The proposed research seeks to investigate the relationship between individuals' speed choice and accident liability. In doing so the researchers seek to improve the methods available for assessing the benefits of new technologies which seek to address the problem of excessive speed. These new solutions have the potential to radically alter the distribution of traffic speeds and as a result the estimation of the safety impacts cannot be reliably made using currently available relationships. In this research we return to first principles to investigate the relationship between individual speed choice and accident liability. In doing so we seek to address many of the short comings of the original research undertaken in the 1960s and 70s. The research will investigate a range of speed measures across a range of traffic environments to establish which measures are more highly correlated with safety and the robustness of the relationships. The research is expected to benefit future researchers and research funders as it will allow rationalisation of experimental programmes. Finally two systems which represent the range of potential systems will be used to identify the way subjects may relocate within the speed distribution as a consequence of such new technologies.
