Summary on Grant Application Form
This programme will research high resolution coupled-column electrokinetic separations on planar substrates. This will involve the development of high efficiency mixing through a technique that controls local zeta potential within micro-fabricated channels. Isotachophoresis (ITP) and capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) will be coupled as ITP/ITP and ITP/CZE systems, utilising aqueous and non-aqueous (ITP only) supporting media. These coupled separations will be implemented in planar channels with the integration of high resolution conductivity detection for exact zone transfer and separation monitoring and quantitation. Dual channel systems to enable simultaneous cation and anion determination will also be developed. A thorough investigation into the behaviour of ITP in folded channels and during zone transfer procedures will involve modelling and simulation to determine optimum channel geometries. The features of this research will be evaluates through the measurement of samples of industrial and environmental significance.
