Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is the result of a long period of collaboration between Principal Investigators at UMIST and Loughborough University. The strengths of the two research groups are complementary. Between them, they have signficant expertise in the areas of the Design of effective manufacturing systems, lean and agile manufacture, manufacturing information systems, performance measurement in manufacturing, organisation of the global enterprise and team working for global management. Discussions with the collaborators on this project and many others indicate that virtual and agile manufacturing systems provide tremendous opportunity and challenge for global business. However, much of the detailed organisation structuring, integration requirements, operational methods and implementation procedures still need to be clarified and clearly explained if costly mistakes are to be avoided. This project will develop a knowledge base and a methdology providing detail to underpin the new way of working and demonstrate to industrialists how they can go about forming or becoming part of a virtual network.
