Summary on Grant Application Form
There is a significant demand for high performance flat panel displays such as the Field Emission Displyas with their wide viewing angle, high brightness and wide operating temperature range. The use of carbon cathodes in FEDs considerably reduces their cost by simplifying the fabrication and increasing the yield. Nanostructured sp2 carbon and nanocrystalline diamond are identified as the most attractive carbon phases for cathodes, as they can satisfy the requirements of emission fields under 3 V/um, emission site densities of 100,000 /cm2, and immunity to poisoning. However, existing preparation methods for these materials, unlike for diamond-like carbon, are not industrially viable or are unsuitable for use with low cost glass substrates. This project aims to resolve these manufacturing issues by developing a low temperature deposition route using the cathodic arc suitable for glass substrates. The resulting cathodes will be subject to an extensive characterisation and lifetime testing programme and incorporated into a demonstrator device.
