Ordered organic films offer a low - cost and low- toxicity alternative to inoranic semiconductors for existing and novel optoelectronic applications. Operation over the whole visible spectrum is possible, and new possibilities arise as a result of the unique properties of these anisotropic molecular films. Ordered layers of materials such as PTCTA can be grown on a range of substrates, in particular compound inorganic semiconductors such as GaAs and InP. This allows an integration of mature inorganic semiconductor technology, where the Principal Investigator has considerable relevant experience, with the novel properties of organic materials to produce composite structures. The approach is likely to apply this expertise to a developing area of technology, making use of a new Materials Physics laboratory at Aberystwyth, central research facilities and collaboration with groups across Europe . In inorganic optoelectronic devices, the limitation is often related to thin film structural and compositional quality and the control of metal contracts. The performance of organic - based devices is affected by similar problems and the approach is thus to apply a range of complementary experimental techniques to probe the chemistry and electronic properties of the thin film growth and simple device structures.
