Summary on Grant Application Form
The UK water industry is addressing the major challenge of reducing leakage from water supply and distribution networks. Pressure control is an important method of leakage reduction. The current industrial approach to pressure control works well only for single input sub-networks. This research will consider sub-networks mith many inputs. Furthermore, the pressure control algorithms considered in the literature are only for the steady-state situation. However, pipe networks are never really in a steady state, and dynamic behaviour should to be taken into account. The dynamic behaviour of these sub-networks including inertia and transient dynamics will be investigated. The relevant dynamic models will be formulated and used for designing stable and robust control strategies. The expected benefits include leakage reduction, fewer pipe bursts and improved water quality. The results will improve standards of living by providing a better service for customers and the conservation of an important enviromental resource.
