Summary on Grant Application Form
A narrow band diode laser will be constructed so that it is frequency stabilised through feedback control. Its output will be injected into a cavity formed by high reflectivity mirrors whose length will be controlled so that it is resonant with the laser's wavelength. Absorption of a target gas will then be measured in the cavity, and the detection limits determined.Operation of the system at wavelengths in the near ir around 1650 nm will be optimised for measurement of the absorption on first overtone transitions of a selected pollutant of industrial significance, for example methyl iodide, hydrocarbons or hydrofluorcarbons. Optimisation will require measurements of interfering absorptions from naturally occurring species, selection of appropriate wavelength regions for species selectivity, measurement of sampling effects, elimination of saturation in the high finesse cavity. When such an instrument has been tested in the laboratory we shall attempt to detect the targeted species an appropriate industrial site.
