Summary on Grant Application Form
The research will take place in four work packages.1. No data currently exist for the response of a PCD-IMS to the seven compounds listed above. Therefore the essential first step will be the production of definitive data that will enable the behaviour of the system to dynamic concentration profiles, typically generated through thermal description, to be predicted.2. The sample-instrument interface will be designed and constructed. Materials and analyte handling systems will be selected and built so that VOC may be collected from the sampled matrix by a capillary membrane extractor, and swept into a miniaturised adsorption/desorption device. Any trapped VOC will be recovered and concentrated by thermal desorption, and the desorption profile will be successfully heart-cut into the PCD-IMS.3. The analytical functionality of the new interface will be explored and exploited. Programmed thermal desorption, and programme ion densities will be studied, before formulation of a two-dimensional separation methodology for the seven analytes listed above.4. A programme of laboratory and field trails will be run to establish the performance envelope of the prototype.
