The proposed project will carry out basic research into materials, instrumentation and techniques needed for the implementation of distributed fibre optic chemical sensors based on the evanescent interaction in the cladding of optical fibres. Evanescent Raman scattering in permeable polymer claddings could lead to the development of generic distributed chemical sensing system, but the practicality of this approach needs to be determined by quantifying the scattered signal levels. In parallel, systems based evanescent absorption in optical fibres with claddings manufactured from doped permeable polymers will be investigated. Two approaches will be undertaken. Firstly, stable near infrared reagents have been identified in previous studies will be used for doping the cladding polymers. Secondly, opto-active conductive polymers that will be synthesised and characterised in this study will be used. Combining the sensing fibres with optical time domain reflectometry technique will lead to a distributed sensing system suitable for the detection of acidic and basic vapours. Optimised sensing fibres will be used to evaluate the limits of the performance of the distributed chemical sensors based on optical fibres.
