Summary on Grant Application Form
We will study the cyclisation of:1. methylenecyclopropane adducts with aldehydes - aimed at the bicycle [3.2.1] octane nucleus and the related tricyclic ring systems typified in gibberellins and kaurenoid natural products;2. methylenecyclopropane adducts with ketones - aimed at synthesis of decalins and part-steroid structures;3. methlenecyclopropane adducts with epoxides - an alternative route to the bicycle [3.2.1] octane nucleus; 4. methylenecyclopropane adducts for the synthesis of seven membered rings. The stereochemistry of all the cascade cyclisations will be examined when initiated by SmI2 with various additives (HMPA, DMPU), and compared to the effect of using alternative methodology for generating ketyl radicals (most particularly with Zn/TMSC1 and a photochemical approach using Et3N/hn)
