Oilfield scale has long been recognised as one of the major problems in the oil production industry. The most common scales encountered in North Sea offshore operations are the carbonate and sulphate salts of calcium, barium and strontium. The formation of such mineral scales may result in greatly reduced well performance as the rock pores, tubulars and topside machinery become choked by a build up of insoluble inorganic precipitate. The most effective preventative measure in dealing with the problem, especially for the chemically resistant, thermodynamically stable precipitates such as barium sulphate, is through the use of chemical scale growth inhibitors applied either by continual injection into the produced fluids or downhole by the squeeze process. This project is designed to study areas related to inorganic scale formation and inhibition using synchrotron radiation techniques. Using synchrotron radiation, systems will be studied in situ under common 'down hole' oilfield reservoir conditions. This project will combine the expertise of Farquahar and Wogelius in using synchrotron radiation methods to provide direct information concerning surface interactions, with current mechanistic interpretations of scale inhibitor interactions at the mineral-solution interface which have been developed from indirect measurements by Graham and Sorbie.
