Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a collaborative proposal between Cranfield University , Engineering systems Department and the Materials Science centre at UMIST. The primary aim of this project is to investigate the microwave-curing of aerospace resin systems. The remit for Cranfield is to evaluate a simple, low-cost temperature probe. In addition to this, due to the insensitivity of optical fibres to EMI, a diffuse reflectance probe and a transmission FTIR probe will be developed for in situ microwave cure monitoring. The initial studies will be carried out on model resin systems and then commercially available thermosets and prepreg-based materials will be evaluated. A key element of the project will be the post-cure characterisation of the material via DMTA and solid state NMR (in collaboration with UMIST).
