The programme is concerned with the development of digital image enhancement techniques, which will improve the quality of images acquired in poor visibility conditions. Examples of such conditions include outdoor scenes in haze and fog, and images obtained in the course of underwater inspection.Previous work in this area has been based on an assumption of diffuse illumination; i.e. it has been assumed that the scene illumination comes from all angles. In the proposed work the interest is in conditions of strongly directional illumination. Such conditions commonly arise when the illumination is artificial rather than natural, for example when driving a car at night in fog or steering a submersible vehicle in murky water. The work will be done in three stages. Firstly a suitable forward-looking model for the image degradation process will be formulated. Secondly, an algorithm for image enhancement will be designed and tested. Finally a real-time demonstration system will be produced and evaluated. Each stage of work will be done with reference to three main types of scene:Daylight haze with directional sunlight, night-time haze/fog with artificial illumination, and murky underwater situations, again with artificial illumination.
