The fullerenes C60 and C70 are to be both polyalkylated and polytrifluoroalkylated, the derivatives separated by HPLC, and characterised by spectroscopic means. The regiochemistry observed will be analysed in order to obtain better understanding of the electronic and steric effects that operate in these molecules. This will permit a formulation of a theory of the nature and origin of the addition patterns, of greater generality than that currently available. The helium-3 NMR shifts of derivatives containing helium-3 within the cages will be examined to both confirm the isomeric purities of the isolates components and to establish a correlation between the shifts and the nature of the addends. Such a correlation will be of fundamental importance in subsequent characterisation of fullerene derivatives in general. The reactivity and regiochemical data will be supplemented by information gained from the directing effect of the oxide function in fullerene oxides, and by addition patterns from a variety of reactions (especially halogenation and arylation) to be carried out on higher fullerenes. The wider applicability of alkylation and trifluoroalkylation to increase solubility and volatility of fullerenes and derivatives will be examined, together with any promising photochemical properties of the oxides in particular.
