Chemical force microscopy is a newly-developed scanned probe technique that seeks to combine chemical recognition with atomic force microscopy. We have demonstrated that the technique has the sensitivity to discriminate between molecules that differ solely in their chirality. We propose a programme of study to place these observations upong a quantitative basis and to use the technique to address fundamental questions about the nature of molecules in contact regions. We propose a parallel investigation of CFM via computational chemistry that will help interpret observations and help in the design of new experiments.Reactions take place when molecules meet. We wish to discover whether we can use the AFM to bring molecules together, react them and then break a bond. This should give insight into the nature of the interaction zone and new data upon the strength of chemical bonds and give insight into the phenomenon of friction.
