Summary on Grant Application Form
This project is aimed at improving the level of understanding associated with bond performance between pavement layers. The programme has three focussed stages.1) Quantify the differences in pavement life with various degrees of bond using currently available computer programs and Finite Element programs (eg CAPA).2) Perform laboratory experiments to investigate a range of bonding materials and conditions. Existing equipment such as the shear box will be used to measure bond stiffness and assess the possibility of bond breakdown under load. An accelerated trafficking simulation will be designed and fabricated to investigate the degree to which bond improves with time, temperature and traffic.3) An in-situ evaluation of bond strength and condition will be undertaken. Three techniques will be used: (i) a method of back-analysing data from the Falling Weight Deflectometer, (ii) an ultrasonic technique using equipment purchased on the project, and (iii) a partial coring technique pioneered in Sweden. The objective of this stage will be to assess whether any of the techniques are suitable for routing usage (eg compliance testing).
