The unique capabilities of synchrotron radiation as a source for infrared microspectroscopy will be use to investigate infrared spectre of single cells. The high signal-to-noise quality spectra recorded using the synchrotron source of spatial resolution <10 microns on tissue sections will allow the correlation of very subtle changes in IR band position and intensity with cells associated with malignant, pre-malignant and normal tissue. The detailed information thus obtained will be used in studies using conventional source infrared microspectroscopy and non-microscopic infrared spectroscopy aimed at IR identification of the above cell types in tissue sections from excised oral tumours and from cervical biopsies, and in exfoliated material from cervical smear tests and from oral brushing. The results will be used to inform strategies to base diagnostic tests on infrared spectroscopic analysis, and similarly to develop IR-based prognostic indicators, in the areas of cervical cancer and oral cancer.
