This project proposed will develop a control architecture for a robotic interactive machine which can be used in schools of the National Autistic Society (NAS) as a remedial tool for children with autism. The project will use technology from the fields robotics, adaptive systems and social agents and will draw from previous research on interaction, communication and imitation. The system will be developed in collaboration with teachers of the NAS in order to ensure its relevance and applicability. Prototypes will be tested and evaluated in schools of the NAS. In the last stage of the project results and experiences should contribute to the specification of a general architecture for using mobile robots as social agents which can function as social mediators between the autistic child, teachers, and other children. By its completion the project will have produced a novel prototype for human-robot interfaces which will advance research on social agents. The project is supposed to make a significant contribution to the international reputation of UK research in technology for people with cognitive disabilities. Moreover, it will make a contribution to improve the quality of life for children with autism.
