The programme will use tuneable VUV radiation from the Daresbury SRS to probe the spectroscopy and decay dynamics of medium sized polyatomic radicals and ions in the gas phase. Two apparatus already constructed will be used. First, fluorescence excitation spectra will be recorded as a function of photon energy. This experiment can observe fluorescence both from the parent cation and from a neutral fragment formed by photodissociation of Rydberg states of a parent neutral. This technique will be extended by the detection of dispersed fluorescence and the use of a supersonic beam source. Second, valence threshold photoelectron spectra, and TPEPICO, PIFCO, and TPEFCO spectroscopies of isolated electronic states of the parent ion will be obtained. This technique will be extended by the construction of an analyser for energetic valence photelectrons, allowing the effects of autoionisation in polyatomic molecules to be probed. These experiments will be applied to a range of polyatomics, especially the mixed halides of group IV of the periodic table and the hydrofluorocarbons, with application in the field of plasma etching and atmospheric physics. From a more pure scientific viewpoint, we hope to understand the criteria for statistical or dynamic behaviour in excited electronic states of polyatomic cations.
