Summary on Grant Application Form
As oil exploration and production moves to deeper waters and towards the frontiers of the Atlantic margins, floating production systems are becoming progressively more common, many of which are ship-shaped floating facilities. Of the latter, especially those in benign conditions outside the North Sea are converted tankers designed for a different purpose, different exposure and different environments. Safety, particularly in extreme conditions, is becoming a key issue. This proposal will address the stability safety of FPSOs in intact and damaged conditions in extreme environments and make suitable recommendations for safeguarding against potential disastrous consequences. The proposed research constitutes main stream activity at the Ship Stability Research Centre where extreme behaviour and safety of most floating marine structures is actively being researched.
