The research aims to build on the opportunities offered by dispersion managed solitons to determine the most suitable use of this approach inhigh speed transmission and networks. The work is divided into four work areas (1) modelling and theory (2) WDM transmission (3) TDM transmission and (4) all-optical processing.Work area (1) will directly support the experimental programme as well as developing our understanding of dispersion managed solitons. Work areas (2) and (3) cover the experiments based around the recirculating loops which will be used to investigate and demonstrate WDM and high speed TDM DM soliton transmission. The WDM work will use a variety of fibre types as the main transmission medium to establish advantages/disadvantages of standard, DS and Truewave fibre types. We will also use more complex maps where advantage is anticipated (eg with 2 or more dominant transmission fibres). We will also develop the potential shown by saturable absorption effects through NPR and later in the programme semiconductor devices. The programme will address the upgrade to 40Gbit/s over standard fibre and experiment with 40 to 100Gbit/s single channel solitons. Finally a range of advanced functions using NOLMs (incorporating SA's) for the WDM/TDM interface will be investigated.
