Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is concerned with the production of reliable models to describe the behaviour of HTS conductors under conditions of cyclic applied loads. In order to achieve this the first part of the programme involves collecting accurate data on the physical and elastic properties of BSSCO and BSCCO conductors, much of which we possess already. The second part of the programme involves the use of finite element methods to model accurately the behaviour of the Ag/BSSCO under stress. The third part of the programme involves the verification of the FEM with observation of cracks (in collaboration with Prof Larbalestier at Wisconsin). A NDT X-ray technique at SBU will be used to evaluate core uniformity and this can be fed back into the FEM model. Using a purpose built straining jig we will be able to examine crack development within the BSSCO core in situ.
