Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the project is to evaluate fully the value of the modulated optical reflectance (MOR) imaging technique for characterisation of high temperature superconducting (HTS) thin flms and microwave devices. The project builds on pilot studies that have demonstrated a correlation between room temperature MOR signal and superconducting state HTS film properties revealed by the electron beam induced voltage (EBIV) contrast technique. A high resolution MOR imaging system must be developed to produce images of HTS microwave devices for comparison with EBIV images. A detailed quantitative comparison of MOR and EBIV images of HTS microwave resonators in proposed to assess MOR capability in determining HUTS properties at room temperature. Microwave characterisations of resonators would be completed to develop an understanding of the relationship between microwave performance and film defects revealed by MOR and EBIV. An assessment is proposed of the potential of MOR as a non-destructive HTS film evaluation technique that could assist in setting film deposition parameters and in substrate scale-up.
